“Out of the Infinite Darkness” is a cosmic sono-drama performed by Roman Norfleet & Be Present Art Group, featuring an 8-piece ensemble with dancers. Interpreted through sound and movement, and drawing on Afro-diasporic imagination and imagery, the work imagines life before the humanoid form—spirit and energy-beings emerging from the infinite darkness of space and descending to Earth.

The piece explores darkness not as a racial construct, but as an original, generative force that predates “blackness,” melanin, and physical form itself. Through layered sonic storytelling, these beings take on human bodies, reckon with new physical experience, navigate chaos and evolution, discover spiritual mission and purpose, and ultimately transition into another realm—into ancestorhood. Written by Roman Norfleet.
